ROBERT G. LUNA
Candidate
Why Thrive LA endorses ROBERT
Robert G. Luna is the 34th Sheriff of Los Angeles County, elected in 2022 to lead the largest sheriff's department in the nation. Before that, he spent 36 years with the Long Beach Police Department, including seven years as Chief of Police from 2014 to 2021. Raised in unincorporated East Los Angeles by Mexican immigrant parents, Luna holds a master's degree in public administration from Cal State Long Beach and is a graduate of the FBI National Executive Institute and Harvard's program for senior executives in state and local government. The Sheriff has one core job: keep the residents of Los Angeles County safe and run a professional, accountable department. Luna has delivered on that job. Violent crime is falling, clearance rates are rising, and the department is rebuilding staffing after years of cuts. This November, voters face a rematch with former Sheriff Alex Villanueva, and the choice comes down to measurable results. We will keep holding the Sheriff's office to a high standard on fiscal discipline and enforcement, and Luna's record gives us reason to expect continued progress. The numbers tell the story. Violent crime in LASD-patrolled areas has fallen every year of Luna's tenure. Homicides are down 14% year over year, and 2024 saw the fewest homicides in five years. Luna created a Crime Strategy Unit that uses data to target the people and places driving crime, and he raised clearance rates for both violent and property crimes, meaning more offenders are actually being caught. He surged deputies onto Metro to make transit safer for riders, and during the 2025 wildfires he led anti-looting operations to protect evacuated homes and businesses. On homelessness, Luna pairs outreach with action. His Homeless Outreach Services Teams have resolved more than 300 encampments and more than 140 RVs, moving more than 1,000 people off the streets. Inside the department, he appointed a civilian Chief Financial Officer to tighten spending, secured funding for new academy classes and equipment upgrades, and launched a public dashboard reporting crime statistics, uses of force, and personnel complaints. The people who do the work stand with him. Luna is endorsed by the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs (ALADS), the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL), the Los Angeles County Firefighters, and District Attorney Nathan Hochman, along with BizFed and the Central City Association. Robert Luna has earned a second term through results, not rhetoric.
Key positions
- Crime Is Falling: Violent crime in LASD-patrolled areas has dropped every year under Luna, homicides are down 14% year over year, and 2024 recorded the fewest homicides in five years. His Crime Strategy Unit and higher clearance rates mean more offenders are held accountable.
- Backed by Law Enforcement: Endorsed by ALADS, LAPPL, the Los Angeles County Firefighters (IAFF Local 1014), the Long Beach POA, the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs Association, and District Attorney Nathan Hochman. The deputies who patrol LA County trust his leadership.
- Encampments Cleared, Streets Reclaimed: LASD Homeless Outreach Services Teams have resolved more than 300 encampments and more than 140 RVs, moving more than 1,000 people off the streets. Enforcement is part of the solution, not an afterthought.
- Business Community Support: BizFed PAC, the Central City Association, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Los Angeles Latino Chamber of Commerce all back Luna. Safe streets and safe transit are the foundation for every small business in the county.
- Watchpoint: Fiscal Discipline: Luna campaigned for Measure A, a countywide tax increase, and Proposition 1, a major new spending program. We expect him to keep his department's focus on enforcement and efficiency, and to make his civilian CFO's work show up as real savings for taxpayers.
